Weekly markets in Tuscany

Every town and village in Tuscany has its own weekly market. You can find almost everything at the market: fresh fruit and vegetables, the most delicious pecorino cheese, fresh porchetta, tasteful dried boar sausages, honey, meat and fish. But it is not just about food. You can find clothing, shoes, curtains, beautiful fabrics, bedspreads, sheets, towels, kitchenware, tools, plants and flowers, let's say just about everything. Most markets start early in the morning, at about 7 am, and they are open until about 1 pm.

Mercato Centrale, Florence
Larger cities also have a covered market, the mercato coperto. These markets are open every morning on weekdays. Here you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, meat, fish, bread and wine. The most famous covered market of Tuscany is definitely the Mercato Centrale in Florence. This covered market was recently completely renovated. On the ground floor you find the actual market with not only all kinds of fresh products but also typical dishes such as trippa and lampredotto. On the first floor there are restaurants which offer typical local dishes. This market is really worth a visit!

the antiques market in Arezzo
Not all markets sell food and clothing. There also are antique markets. The most famous antique markets of Tuscany are those of Pisa, Lucca and Arezzo. Arezzo is the largest antiques market of Tuscany. Here collectors can really find everything: antique furniture, old jewelry, paintings, musical instruments, books, etc... The antiques market of Arezzo, the Fiera Antiquaria di Arezzo, takes place every first Sunday of the month and the Saturday before. In Pisa the antiques market takes place every second weekend of the month and in Lucca every third weekend of the month. In Montepulciano at the craft market you will find the most beautiful handmade fabrics, but also used clothing and antiques. It is lovely to snoop around here.

In Siena, every Wednesday the market is held at Fortezza. In Arezzo, in Piazza Sant'Agostino, there is a market every day. In Pisa you find a daily market in Piazza delle Vettovaglie and also in Livorno there is a daily market. In Lucca is there a large market every Wednesday and Saturday around Via dei Bacchettoni and finally, there is a large market on Thursday in Grosseto just outside the city walls.

This is a summary of medium-sized markets in touristic places in Tuscany.
